Improving the welfare of animals to safeguard human health and welfare

Background

The Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) is a professional membership organization bringing together Veterinary surgeons across Kenya. The association is duly registered under the Societies Act, Cap 108 of the Laws Kenya with a mandate to promote the welfare of its members, safeguard the health and welfare of animals and contribute in the improvement of the animal resource industry, the association is made up of 11 branches, one of them being the KVA Nairobi Branch.

The association (and hence the branches) achieves its goals by acting as a resource centre for the veterinary profession and farmers. This is through providing leadership in the animal resource industry, lobbying and formulation of policies and laws affecting the industry and advocating for better animal health, animal welfare, management and best practices in the delivery of veterinary services. KVA Nairobi branch being the seat of the national office is heavily involved in ensuring the association accomplishes its objectives. The branch organizes and participates in several activities in line with KVA’s vision, mission and objectives. These activities include community outreach aimed at sensitizing the larger population at grassroots on animal health, production, animal welfare, antimicrobial stewardship, public health, and One Health among other topics. The community outreach serves to bring animal health clinics closer to the people, addressing animal health, animal welfare and transdisciplinary One Health issues practically and offering free preventative and control options through vaccination and extension services. The branch also hosts scientific conferences, workshops and Continuous Professional Development events, among other activities, targeting animal health professionals, and stakeholders in the animal industry.
